What is Turrón and how is it made?
Turrón is the most international Spanish sweet.
Turrón has an evident tradition in the Mediterranean region though its precise origin is unknown. All Mediterranean cultures have manipulated honey, dried fruits and nuts to create high energy products that were easy to handle and transport.
The introduction of sugar in Europe by the Arab culture attributed to the creation of a new product: Marzipan, which was originally made exclusively of sugar and almonds.
The current Turrón de Alicante or Almond & Honey Brittle was brought about from the similarities between marzipan and early turrons. Turrón de Alicante is made of almonds, honey, sugar and egg whites. Turron de Jijona or Almond and Honey Soft Turrón is derived from Turrón de Alicante, it contains the same ingredients but it requires a process that transforms the chemical and physical form of the candy, creating an absolutely unique Turrón.
